In
early March, a potentially catastrophic event took place at
Desert Regional Medical Center. The hospital experienced a
malfunction of their generators and the main power source was
lost. At the request of Desert Regional, Mission supplied 6
ambulances including 4 BLS units, 2 CCT units, and provided 4
supervisors within 22 min. of Desert Regional activating their
internal disaster plan. With the help of other agencies a
command center was established, where it deployed EMT's, nurses,
and paramedics throughout the hospital. With great direction and
guidance from the ER and NICU staff, the disaster plan was
implemented within minutes of activating. With the hard work of
local electricians and maintenance staff at the hospital, the
back-up power held strong until the main power source was fixed.

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 underscore the
significance of EMS planning and anticipating such events.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) plays a vital role in
responding to, evaluating, and intervening in potentially
catastrophic events. Mission Ambulance is proud to serve
Riverside County, and if disaster strikes, Mission will be
ready.
